Is my old Speedlight 550 ex compatible with my new Digital Rebel 4 Ti?

I just bought a Canon Digital Rebel 4 Ti, but my older Speedlight 550 ex doesn't seem to be following the cameras instructions.  It does fire but more,as if the flash is running in a manual mode.  I have the flash set to ETTL.   Any suggestions?

thank you

Hi Jaguarcult!

The EOS Rebel T4i is compatible with your Speedlite 550 EX flash.  It sounds like the camera may be firing faster than what your flash supports.  Be sure to go into your EOS Rebel T4i camera settings and check that it's using ETTL and not ETTL2 or other setting.

If you need help checking the settings on your EOS Rebel T4i, you can contact us for support HERE.

Hope this helps!

Well I've certainly used a 550EX with a t4i or it's equivalent UK version, and it works fine.

If you are using the cameras pop-up flash as the master, and a single 550EX off-camera set the camera to Easy Wireless and it should be fine. you could also use custom wireless for more control but if you just want E-TTL control of the flash then Easy Wireless will do fine.

Also since the camera does the flash metering and your camera has E-TTL II then there is no way to set the camera to the old E-TTL mode. Any more issues then check to make sure that the receiver window on the front of the Speedlite (just above the red panel) is aimed back towards the camera to ensure it "sees" the signal from the camera. Folks holding flashes in their hands often obscure the receiver window.
