M50 Raw image artifacts

Hi.

I am trying to take some raw pictures with my canon M50 but every picture either has a black bar on the side or white horizontal lines.

The Jpeg looks fine, its just the raw

Does anyone know what might be the cause of this?

What aspect ratio do you have the camera set to (page 208 of the User Manual).  That could account for the left and right black bars.

It does appear there's corruption in the image though.  What specific media card are you using (brand, full-sized vs micro-sized, and other details you can provide).  Note that micro-sized cards that require adapters can lead to all kinds of problems.

I was using an adapter which may explain the problem. Its weird that the jpeg was fine though. I'll give it a try with a full size card and see what happens.

Data corruption could end up being in the JPEG files as well.  Note that RAW files are larger than JPEG, so if there are issues with writing to the card, much higher probability with RAW.

Yes, get rid of all your micro-sized cards.  Use only full-sized cards from reputable brands from reputable dealers.  e.g. SanDisk, Lexar, Angelbird to name a few.  Also, avoid places such as Amazon which are known to carry counterfeit cards.

Is  this a screen grab of the HDMI output from the camera. Most capture units record 16:9 aspect ratio, and images from the M50 are 3:2 so that might explain the black bars - and then make this more likely to be card corruption issues.

If your see this corruption in some software, give Canon DPP a try as I have seen cases where DPP saw no issue with a RAW yet Lightroom displayed artefacts that looked like corruption.

Mostly correct. Items from Amazon itself are OK. It is the Amazon Market Place stores that are not reliable and sometimes it is difficult to tell whether it is from Amazon or one of its market place stores. BTW, Amazon itself is a authorized Canon USA retailer just make sure you read the whole web page before you buy anything.

Although I too recommend you not use micro-SD but I doubt it is what is causing your issue. First do a full reset of the M50. I suspect you have something set incorrectly. Resetting will correct it. Consult your manual if you do not know how to do a full reset.
