Windows 11 driver for imageCLASS MF4890dw doesn't work

I have an Imageclass mf4890dw printer.  Although it works just fine, I found out that Canon no longer supports it.  I just bought a new PC with Windows 11.  I downloaded the drivers recommended on Canon's website, but when I go to print I get the message "Driver is unavailable."  Is it possible I have to junk this perfectly functional printer?  The website says that these are the drivers for Windows 11.  HELP!!

Hey there!

This printer was retired in 2021. This means that software and driver development ended in 2021, so the most currently available drivers and software are the last ones to be made. We recommend upgrading to a current printer if they do not work on your PC.

You will find all of the available software and drivers on our site HERE.

If you'd like to speak with a Canon Upgrade Specialist about your options, they're at 866-443-8002, Monday through Friday from 9am to 9pm (ET).

I saw that Canon says they will only support their printers for 10 years.  This is truly execrable behavior!  I should not be forced to buy a new printer when the old one is still perfectly functional, just because Canon won't publish a new driver for it.  If you told me that the printer cannot be made to function with Windows 11, that would be different.  But to force me to buy another printer because of an arbitrary 10-year support period is extremely wasteful, terrible for the environment and for my pocketbook, worse than planned obsolescence.  I will never buy another Canon product!

HEY !

I reluctantly just went to a Win 11 PC (I still love my Win 7 machines) and was very disappointed that Windows reported "Driver is unavailable" when it found my MF4890 on the network.  And I was extremely disappointed when Canon's webpage for the printer would not show me ANY driver files for the 4890!!

Well..  I dug up a folder on my old Win7 laptop that contains the MF4890 driver files and I 'ran' the executable file and it installed all the drivers successfully on my Win11 PC!!

The entire folder was identified as: "MF4800_Series_MFDrivers_W64_us_EN_1"

ALSO, just ran the file: "Canon_ToolBox_4911mf13_Win_EN.exe" and it created the folder:  "ToolBox_4911mf13_Win_EN" and I ran the 'Setup.exe' within that folder and I can now scan to my Win 11 PC!

I have the same problem and can't find the files as described by mbpc.  Anyone have any suggestions where I can get them?

If I cant get this to work, I cant believe I will have to scrap a fine working unit due to a driver issue.  Not happy about this.

Don't know where @mbpc found those drivers and got them to work. Every older driver i try win11 stops me

I have a new desk top that I can't load this printer onto. I also have a new lap top that I was able to load the printer onto. How did you run the executable file on your win7 over to the win11? Do you mean you just copied the file information MF4800_Series_MFDrivers_W64_us_EN_1 onto the driver page of your win11 computer?

I managed to get this to work, using Canon's driver on the link given by Stephen above.

It kept getting stuck when it tried to find the printer. In the end when I did a search by the IP address of the printer it found it and completed the installation.
I found the IP address in the printer properties on the old computer, but I assume they should be on the router too.

Although this model is nearly 13 yrs old.  Canon is still supporting it.  Drivers for Windows 11 are available

  Last release was 1/2025.

They are here.
