Canon g7x mark 2 shuts off after 20 mins on highest settings

I'm trying to record a continuous video for that extra hd quality on highest setting. But the camera keeps shutting off after 20 minutes. Is there any way to overcome this issue?

Without knowing your budget, we cannot recommend any equipment.

Under 1,000

Looks like Canon has discontinued most of the less expensive camcorders.  The Vixia HF G70 retails for around $1,250.    If you'd like to stick with a camera, there's the new EOS R50 that would meet your budget:

  • Body only (no lens) - $679
  • with 18-45mm lens - $799
  • with 18-45mm and 55-210mm lenses - $1,029

In looking at the User Manual for the EOS R50, it wouldn't have the same limitations as you're experiencing.  However, if your SD card is not formatted to "exFAT", it would still have a 4 GB file size limit.  So if you go with the EOS R50, be sure to format the cards in the camera which should format the card to "exFAT".

How do you format cards?

Hi HellaDonna,

Are you looking to create content that can be viewed later or are you wanting to do live streaming?

It sounds like individual movies, but I want to be sure?

@Helladonna,
Hi Again,
Ricky always has excellent recommendations. 👍  The camera will format the memory cards for you. Different formatting can have file size limitations. Not every camera supports different formatting, but his suggestion fits your budget and can meet your recording times depending on the image quality and media size being used.

Depending on quality settings and media:
The camera can record 4k/30p up to 9.5 hrs.
More if a lower quality is used.

This document gives those specifications:

The R50 is also an excellent stills camera so you can use it for photos too.

Things that might be helpful:

Multiple memory cards
Batteries (the camera does not run continuously unless its plugged in)
So, maybe an AC Adapter
Tripod
Lighting
Additional lenses depending on the perspective you are looking for

For a conventional video camera experience Canon also offers a G50.  I found this (direct from Canon's refurbished store).  Same price point.  Don't be put off by refurbished. These cameras come with the same 1 yr Canon warranty as new devices. Refurbished devices are a good way to stretch your dollar and save some money in the process. Benefits of a device like this. Its comes with a bigger battery. It comes with an AC Adapter. Performance wise, its about the same. 4K image quality. It doesn't offer the same bitrate selection as the R50, however both record in .mp4 which is great for your intended use.
