OK So I am wondering if I need a Canon printer to print pictures from a Canon EOS camera using Sd card straight from the camera to the printer. Yes I will be shooting in RAW.

If you have a PictBridge compatible camera and printer it will work. Doesn't have to be a Canon PictBridge printer.

However will any printer be able to read the propriety info in the canon raw file?

If you are following the instructions for PictBridge the camera does the RAW conversion. But you need a PictBridge compatible printer.
