Upgrade Suggestions from EOS 2000D

Hi,

I'm thinking about an upgrade from my eos 2000d, but I don't know what to do. My main subject are birds. I'm now shooting with a really old lens, the canon 90-300mm F4.5-5.6. I've 2 possible options:

-Buy a better lens (sigma 150-600 c)

-Buy a new body (R7, R or RP)

My budget is between €1000 en €1500, any recommendations? Thanks!

When Canon first released the new AF lens lineup they ditched their old FD lens mount. Hence why ALL EOS lenses from 1987- present. Say "EF" to differentiate between the old breech lock FD Mount. The EF Mount uses 100% electronic communication there is no mechanical interface.

  1. EF Mount lenses are the original EOS 35mm AF lenses that were originally released in 1987-present. 35mm Film measures 36x24 so does a sensor in a Full Frame digital camera. All of Canon's prefixes for Full Frame lenses always say "EF" meaning coverage for 35mm film and Full Frame.
  2. EF-S Mount lenses are specially designed for APS-C cameras released in 2003-present. EF-S lenses on the other hand will only cover a 22.5x16 image sensor. These lenses will only mount on APS-C cameras. They will NOT mount on any EOS 35mm Film body or a Full Frame Digital Camera. Also the EF-S Mount is MECHANICALLY different from the EF Mount. But is ELECTRICALLY the same as the EF Mount. Do you want to go mirrorless or stay with DSLRs. Also how many Full Frame (EF) lenses do you have since you mentioned Full Frame bodies. It's best to use Full Frame lenses on Full Frame bodies. Image sensor capacity goes down. For instance the R5 has 45 megapixels in Full Frame mode. But only 17 megapixels in 1.6x crop (APS-C) mode.

As we speak I haven't got any full frame lenses, but I'm interested I'm going mirrorless.

What is the Full name listed on your 90-300mm lens. The full name is on the outer ring of the lens in front. This is a film era lens it must be full frame. It can't be APS-C this lens was released before Canon had released APS-C lenses (EF-S) Mount. The lens mounting index on the lens should be a red circle. Instead of a white square denoting an EF-S lens made for APS-C cameras. Which lens is yours pictured below. One says USM in the name. This version uses Micro Motor USM. Not the high-end Ring Type USM AF Motor. The other is the basic DC motor AF version. So check the name on your lens carefully.

What is the main use of your camera. Since your going with mirrorless is low light a concern of yours. Also the cameras mentioned above DO NOT have a built in flash. So a speedlite or external flash unit will be needed.

The lens is use is the one on top. The EF90-300mm F4.5-5.6. My main use is bird photography during standard lighting conditions.

So you do own a Full Frame lens (EF). Do you want to stay with APS-C or go Full Frame since you own a Full Frame lens. If you go Full Frame your 90-300mm will appear shorter than it did. Due to you loosing the 1.6x crop factor. When you're shooting with your current camera you have an Angle of View of 144-480mm. When compared to 35mm Film/ Full Frame. Do you own any other lenses if so list thefFull name of the lens. The full name can be found after removing the lens cap. The outer ring will have the full name of the lens.

I'd look into the EOS R with your current EF 90-300mm because you'll have a better match with the Full Frame lens. Or do you want to stay with APS-C by going with the R7. Either way you'll also need the EF-RF Mount adapter to use your current EF or EF-S lenses.

I don't have any other lenses, but I do have another question: How can you see if your lens is full frame only by looking at it's name on the outer ring?Thank you for your information, now I can make the right choise.
