R7 audio noise when in film mode

LilyBrook

Hi I wonder if anyone can help! I have a R7 and it's making noise when in film mode. Almost like a very tiny, continuous fan. It's not loud but I find it quite obvious on my video clips. I've compared it to my 700d and can't hear the noise at all. I've put both clips in here for comparison, can anyone else hear it and do you have this problem with the R7 when in film mode?

It comes on whether it's recording or not and whatever setting I have it on.  I use a Rode videomic but the noise is there with or without the mic so it's not that. The noise seems worse from the bottom of the camera near the battery compartment but I can also hear it fainter at the top of the body. I would just think this is the noise of the camera except for the fact that my 700d doesn't make any noise at all from the body! I have also tried with with and without the image stabilisation on and it's there regardless.

To make it more confusing, I sent the clips into Canon and they said they couldn't hear the noise but when I showed it to both my partner and parents, they all said they could hear it. Can anyone else?

Any advice would be appreciated! Thank you 🙂

Greetings,

I'm not sure what you mean by "it comes on whether I'm recording or not"?  Your camera is making noises when its sitting idle?  Is this a autofocus noise?  The camera itself doesn't have a fan.

This is worth reviewing for clarity:

Canon Knowledge Base - EOS R7: Movie Recording

I watched your videos.  I'm hearing 2 sounds.  A constant low level sound and an occasional clicking type noise.  Or is that a pet?

Please make a video of the camera making this "noise" using a mobile phone and post that.

Hi Rick thanks for your reply!

What I mean is that as soon as I turn the camera onto movie mode, rather than photo mode, I can hear the noise if I have my ear to the camera body. I can switch from recording to not recording and the noise is still going on inside the camera. But if I switch to photo mode then it stops after a little bit.

It's definitely not autofocus noise as it's a constant noise at the same level, not the noise of auto focusing. I have my camera on fully manual when filming.

Can you not hear the higher drone on the second clip? I'm so confused, it seems so obvious to me! It's a kind of tinny sound. I would think I'm going mad if my partner or parents couldn't hear it 😄 It's not a clicking noise, I'm not sure what that is.

I've tried to get a recording of it with another camera but it is fainter, so if you can't hear it on that clip you probably wont hear it on the other recording.

Thank you for your help anyway, it seems to be a mystery! 🙂

Do you have audio compression enabled in the menus? That will increase background noise pickup by the microphone. Also, Canon often recommends turning off Wi-Fi in the camera while recording a movie. Apparently, radio frequency interference can sometimes be picked up by the camera while recording.

Greetings,

Are you using any 3rd party accessories with the camera besides a memory card?  Are you using a canon lens?

Reset the cameras settings to defaults and retest.  If the camera was purchased from a retailer, I'd visit and see if someone there can help diagnose the issue.

If none of these options are helpful or available, I would recommend that you set up a repair request with Canon and send the camera to them for inspection.  If the noise can be heard as you state, and by others, the camera should be inspected.

Oh good, it's not just me! I am new to video with Canon with my R7 and I was disappointed by the very noticeable whine when I turn on the camera - it continues while the camera is turned on whether I'm filming or not, but stops when the camera goes into sleep mode or is turned off. I don't have any accessories other than the kit lens. I wasn't sure if this is simply "the way it is" with this camera or if there's something wrong with my unit. Not only does it make filming anything with audio difficult, it's also just plain annoying to my ears!

Hi Rachel, thanks for your reply and it's good to hear someone else who can hear this! Have you still got the problem with your camera? I have been to a Canon specialist and the sales assistant confirmed that there was an issue and told me to send it off for repairs. The problem I have is that my camera was a grey import (something I didn't realise when I purchased it!!). I wonder if yours is also a grey import or not?

This is just a guess, but do you have Movie Digital IS enabled?

If so, try disabling it and see if that makes any difference.

Greetings,

Using the dialog and suggestions throughout this thread, if your camera is making unexpected or abnormal sounds, or exhibiting unexpected behavior, please send the camera to Canon for inspection.

Using your camera should be a happy experience, and a way to capture memories. Get your camera looked at.

Thank you to everyone who replied and offered suggestions! I have tried every possible solution but the issue persists. I have been to a Canon specialist and the sales assistant confirmed that there is an unusual noise that shouldn't be occurring during filming. I am not trying to get it repaired or replaced through the shop I purchased it from.

Thank you again and I hope it gets resolved!
