Hi all
In practice, I often shoot with clients who follow what I'm doing live on an external screen. This has proven to be incredibly useful - both in the studio and on location. With my old R5, this wasn't a problem either: I could easily transfer the live image of my shots directly to the external monitor via the HDMI connection, in photo mode.
Now I can no longer use my new Canon R5 MK2 via the HDMI connection in photo mode, the screen and EVF go black, the signal is transmitted perfectly to the external screen, but simply blocks the EVF! Why exactly? And why does this only work in video mode? Why hasn't Canon introduced this for stills as well? Technically it wouldn't be a problem...
Maybe you have a solution to this problem, or maybe Canon is addressing this issue
Best

Hello!. Welcome to the forum.
Just to be clear on what you are saying. You can shoot and record video with either the R5 or R5ii and see the video capture on both an external monitor and the camera.
However, you could shoot stills on the R5 and monitor the captures on both the camera and an external monitor, but are unable to repeat this functionality with the R5II. Is that correct?

Yes. EVF and screen goes black (in photo mode) as soon as I connect the HDMI cable, even if I have activated the dual output option in the HDMI output menu (which is currently only available for movie mode)

Any inputs from someone?

Hello ybn,
I'm sorry to hear that you are having issues with your camera while connected via HDMI. What you are experiencing is odd. You may want to try a different HDMI cable to start with. I would also suggest testing the camera with a different monitor. A TV would suffice for that. If the image displays fine on the external monitor, we may want to try resetting the camera to factory default settings. You can find that setting in the yellow wrench tab #5. In order to access all menu items, make sure that you set the camera to one of the Creative modes such as, P, Av, Tv, or M.

Thanks for the help. Tried different hdmi cables an input sources, as soon as I plug in the hdmi cable to the r5 mk2 screen/evf turns black and all the infos/liveview etc mirrors to the external screen. Is it even possible to have the evf working in photo mode while plugged in the hdmi to the camera?

Hello John_Q and ybn!
I have an R5 II and although I don't use it this way, I have an external USB C/HDMI monitor for my laptop. Just to see what it does, I connected the mark II to my monitor via HDMI and my LCD and EVF go blank when I hook HDMI up to the monitor.
I couldn't remember, so I hooked up my R5, and FWIW, it acted the same and the LCD and EVF went blank as soon as I made the HDMI connection.
I guess I could have them configured incorrectly, but I searched through the menus and PDF manuals and didn't see anything that might change this behavior. Now, as mentioned, this isn't a feature that interests me and I just did this experiment to see what would happen.

thanks for testing this out on your R5 II. It would be easy to solve this problem I guess, since video output does not block the screen/evf. Hope canon will change this soon

Hello, did You find an issue to your problem ? I have the same problem with my new R5m2. I tried to find a différent way to vlog thru the Lens, with camera connect app on iPad in BT and wifi, but the quality is not good 😔

Could changing the HDMI resolution output to HD work? I know you're referring to stills, but it could be something similar. I'm also wanting this feature to be able to shoot from a monopod at concerts (high above me), but be able to view what I'm shooting on a monitor at the bottom of the monopod.
