TS8220 Cannot scan "failed to open a connection to the device (-21345)" MacOS Catalina

circusboy
Contributor

Using MacOS Catalina (10.15.6) the TS8220 prints correctly, but attempting to scan gives "failed to open a connection to the device (-21345)". The TS8220 has current firmware (1.010), is in same room 3' from router and 8' from iMac, on same 2G network. The scanner previously worked before upgrade to Catalina.

  • Using MacOS System Preferences -> Printers & Scanners the "Print" connects and can open print queue and show supply levels etc.
  • The "Scan" Open Scanner gives the "failed to open a connection..." error.
  • I have tried both MacOS Image Capture and Canon IJ Scan Utility Lite.
    • MacOS gives the "failed..." error
    • IJ Scan gives "Cannot communicate with scanner..."
  • I do not have a USB cable long enough to connect directly (and need to use wifi scanning)

Suggestions what else to try or is there already a solution?? Thank you!

Hello.

Try the following adjustment to see if we can resolve this issue:

1.  Go to the Home menu or press the Home button.
2.  Select the Setup icon.  This icon looks like a gear.
3.  Select Device Settings.
4.  Select LAN Settings.
5.  Select Wi-Fi.
7.  Select Settings.
8.  Select Advanced.
9.  Select TCP/IP settings.
10. Select IPv6.  If you see a Yes or No question, choose Yes.
11. Select Enable/disable IPv6.
12. Choose Disable.

13. Once this has been done, turn the printer off and back on.

Next, close any applications that are open on the Mac and perform the following:

1.  Click the Apple and choose System Preferences.  Then open the Printer and Scanners menu.
2.  Highlight and delete any copies of the Canon Printer listed on the left by clicking the minus (-) sign.
3.  Click the plus (+) sign and look for an option that says "Add printer or scanner".  Click this option when you see it.
4.  In the next window, click Default on the upper left corner.  Wait a few moments, then highlight the Bonjour version of the printer.

5.  Click Add at the bottom when it becomes available.

Once the printer has been added, try accessing the "scan" tab in system preferences and see if the scanner can be opened.  If the error persists, we would have to advise that you contact Apple to determine why the AirPrint scanner cannot be accessed, or scan from a different Mac/Windows computer or from an iOS/Android device with the Canon PRINT Inkjet/SELPHY app.

Greetings,

Your product is supported under Catalina OS, but does not include full support like it had under Mojave.

https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/support/details/printers/inkjet-multifunction/ts-s...

Select the software tab and download the IJ Utilities for printing and scanning.

I suggest you uninstall the printer and/or all of its software first (and restart) before runnin the new applications.  If you try to install them over what you have now, the issue will persist.

Rick,

Thank you for the reply. I followed your advice, and when it still didn't work, went further, trying multiple times and variations. Finally, I did the following:

  • Reset (delete) all printers in System Preferences
  • Rebooted computer
  • "Reset All" on the TS8220 (factory default)
  • Unplugged, replugged TS8220 (after 1 minute+)
  • Followed the link (URL) to Canon Setup which
    • Re-installed IJ Network Device Setup Utility, IJ Scan Utility, and Inkjet Extended Survey Program
  • Running Setup discovered the TS8220, configured it for the network, and added it to System Preferences
  • The printer again works
  • The scanner produces the same "failed to open a connection..." error

I can only assume that scanning is one of the TS8220 features not supported by Canon under Catalina.

Colin

Hello Colin,

The scanner should work on the Catalina operating system. If you are able to print but get the (-21345) error when you scan, you can try turning off the Mac default firewall or any other third party firewalls running on the Mac and trying to scan again.

If you are still unable to scan, you can try scanning from the Mac's default Image Capture software using the steps below.

  1. Click on the apple in the upper left hand corner of the screen and then click on system preferences.
  2. In system preferences click on Printers and Scanners.
  3. Highlight the TS8220 and then click on the scan tab at the top of the window.
  4. Click on the option to open the scanner.
  5. Click on the option for overview to preview what is on the glass and then click scan.

Hector,

Thank you for the reply, and I also expected the scanner to work, since it had worked previously and the printer continues to work well. Thank you for your suggestion, but no, it did not answer the question. Before posting the problem, I have tried scanning from the IJ Scan Utility, Image Capture, and System Preferences->Printers & Scanners->Scan->Open Scanner. All of them fail with the (-21345) error. I just tried them again, with the same results (print successful, scan failed).

Below is an excerpt from the log. The confusing part is that AirScanScanner reports connect failure as "Network is down", although the printer functions well, and the IJ Network Setup Utility locates and sets up the TS8220 every time it is run.

Michael, it worked! The log message traffic is substantial, and substantially different, but it successfully connected and scanned.

It boggles the mind that you identified something as esoteric as IPv6, as being the problem, particularly since it functioned fine with Mojave. Your instructions were clear, complete, and well-formated.

Thank you again, and I will add Kudos and Accept as Solution.

Colin

I tried all of the advice and my scanner still won't work. It was working and then suddenly quit.

Under WiFi Settings, I do not have an advanced setting.

WhoGivesAJack, on Catalina 10.15.7, try selecting

  • Settings
  • Network
  • Select your "Connected" network type  e.g. "WiFi"
  • Select Advanced (lower right corner)
  • Select TCP/IP (tab on the top)
  • Select "Configure IPv6" and choose "off"

Reboot to ensure the change is active.

Note: if using a network type of VPN (e.g. ExpressVPN) , instead of straight WiFi, Bluetooth, or Ethernet network type, you will not see the Advanced option.
