Flash compatibility for canon rebel t3

I have a canon rebel t3 and am borrowing a Minolta auto 320x external flash but my camera doesn't seem to be recognizing it. I even have my camera on AV. Does that mean it's simply not compatible? What can I use instead?

A Canon 270EX is a good add-on flash for a Rebel camera.

Generally, flashes with a camera name are tied to that brand of camera and won't work on other brands.
