The Speckled Hummingbird (Adelomyia melanogenys) is a remarkable subject to photograph, with its delicate features and dynamic presence. This image was taken at La Minga Ecolodge near Cali, Colombia, a serene location nestled in the Andean cloud forests, where biodiversity thrives in a vibrant yet fragile ecosystem.
The photograph captures the hummingbird in mid-flight as it feeds on a magenta flower. Its speckled throat, muted green plumage, and subtle iridescence are beautifully illuminated by the soft, diffused light of the forest. The background, blurred with a natural green hue, provides a tranquil yet striking contrast, emphasizing the intricate details of the bird. To achieve this composition, I carefully positioned myself to align with the flower and ensured that the background remained clean to keep the bird as the focal point.
The technical settings for this shot were carefully chosen to freeze the bird’s motion while maintaining a natural sense of movement. Using the Canon R5 paired with the RF 100-500mm lens at 500mm, I set a shutter speed of 1/750 second. This allowed the bird’s body to remain sharp while capturing a subtle blur in the wings, conveying its energy. ISO 800 was used to balance the low-light conditions under the dense forest canopy, preserving the natural tones and fine details without introducing unnecessary noise.
Working with local birding guide Asherita Viajera made this experience even more special. Her expertise not only helped me locate this incredible bird but also deepened my understanding of its behavior and ecological importance. The Speckled Hummingbird is more than a beautiful subject; it is a vital pollinator in its habitat, connecting the delicate web of life in these high-altitude forests.
Photography is not just about capturing moments but about telling stories. This image represents a fleeting connection with a remarkable species and the incredible environment it calls home. It is also a reminder of the importance of preserving these habitats for future generations to explore and appreciate.

Outstanding photo. It is interesting how many species of hummingbirds there are in the Western Hemisphere. Can't recall the number for there are several in Costa Rica alone. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you, John. Hummingbirds truly are remarkable, with over 360 species found only in the Americas. Costa Rica is indeed a haven for them, with around 50 species recorded there. I’m glad you enjoyed the photo!
