Boundary to the Sea

I was driving in the Westfjords of Iceland when I spotted an open field and lots of geologic formations and stone walls.   I found this one interesting leading to the sea.

MPBACK,

This line puzzles me. It's too low to be a defensive position of any kind; and it's too tall to mark a property line. I can't figure out what purpose it serves, but a lot of effort went in to building it. It's odd.

  • yeah, looks like a barrier against another element, like crop or livestock. good composition.

Thanks for your comment.  I think from driving around Westfjords, this stone wall and others in this location were constructed to contain sheep, since they are so numerous here  I shot many frames here and behind me is an  interesting basalt wall, which I also photographed.

I'm jealous of the green in your Iceland pics - was October when we went.  Beautiful shot and so lucky on the lovely sky there.  I'm guessing the wall is to contain sheep or ponies (aka horses - seems they USED to be called the ponies, but there is a huge national push to call them horses).  Ditches (which I've never seen anything like in Iceland) combined with the low fences seem to be a common means of controlling their movement.  And there are a LOT of sheep in Iceland.  The only inexpensive thing (other than geothermal water and energy in abundance - don't tell the data center folks about that or they will build underwater data centers there) was the sheepskin gloves that brought back.

Agreed, killer perspective, nice grab.

Thanks, Marc!

I have been to Iceland before this last trip in May.  I think October is nice there with the golden shrubs and smaller trees in the wild.  When I was driving around in the Westfjords I saw a lot of baby sheep, some just lying in the road.   Luckily the roads in Westfjords see like one car an hour....

Thanks!
