I've been using a graphics program comparable to PhotoShop for many years. It can adjust images in almost any way I want.
I have very limited experience with scanners.
Recently I bought a new Canon CanoScan LiDE 400 flatbed scanner. I'd characterize it as middle of the range in price and quality. The scans are "noisier" than I expected, but otherwise seem to be reasonably okay.
It came bundled with software, of course. The overall program is called "Canon IJ Scan Utility". It has eight buttons for different functions: Auto, Document, Photo, Custom, OCR, Stitch, ScanGear, and PDF Editor. ScanGear has some image adjustment tools, so that is what I have been using so far.
The tools are:
Image Adjustment: Auto, Photo, Magazine, or Document
Unsharp Mask: On or Off
Descreen: On or Off
Reduce Dust and Scratches: None, Low, Medium, High
Fading Correction: None, Low, Medium, High
Grain Correction: None, Low, Medium, High
Gutter Shadow Correction
Adjust tone by using the Saturation/Color Balance controls
Adjust tone by using the Brightness/Contrast controls
Adjust tone by selecting Black/White points
Adjust tone by using special or custom Tone Curves
My question is:
Are any of these adjustments made in the scanning process, or are they all done after the scan, so that I could just as well make them with my graphics program?

Hi,
Some of these settings are done during the scan and some are done after. IJ Scan Utility is a good tool for scanning but if you are using a graphics program comparable to PhotoShop, I would stick with that to edit your scans.
