Hi wwtermite,

I understand you have a Pixma MX922 and for the last 3 months you have incountered issues printing using black ink, faxing and connecting to your home network.

To troubleshoot the printing issue, I recommend reseating the print head followed by two cleanings and one deep cleaning. Skip the nozzle check pattern until the deep cleaning process is complete.

  • Click HERE for infomation and images to assist with Reseating the Print Head.
  • Click HERE for information on Cleaning the print head.
  • Click HERE for information on Deep Cleaning the print head.
  • Click HERE for informatioin on performing the Nozzle Check.

The next set of troubleshooting steps will assist with the faxing issue. To begin, we will need to check the placement of the telephone cables. The following steps will assist you:

  1. Turn the printer so the back is facing you.
  2. Locate the two telephone jacks at the lower right side of the printer.
  3. Confirm the telephone line is plugged into LINE (the last/bottom jack on the printer) is connected to the source of the telephone signal (wall/router).
  4. If a second telephone line is plugged into EXT (the first/top jack on the printer) is connected to a telephone/answering machine.
  5. Turn the printer back to its regular operating position.

Next, we will confirm the signal (dial tone) is received by the printer. Please perform the following steps:

  1. Press the FAX button.
  2. Press the HOOK button.
  3. You should hear a dial tone.
  4. If you hear a dial tone, press the STOP button and move down to the next section.
  5. If you do NOT hear a dial tone, perform the following:
    1. Disconnect the telephone lines currently connected to the printer and their counterpart (wall/router | telephone/answering machine).
    2. Plug the telephone cable into LINE (the last/bottom jack) and into the source of the telephone signal (wall/router)
    3. (Optional) Plug the second telephone cable into EXT (the first/upper jack) and into the telephone/answering machine.
  6. Press the FAX button.

Once the telephone signal (dial tone) has been detected, we need to ensure the fax is set up for the correct type of receive mode. To do this, review the information on the operation panel. The current receive mode will be displayed at the top left of the Fax Standby screen. (e.g. <Fax Only> | <DRPD> | <TEL priority>)

  • Fax only mode is used when all incoming calls are faxes. No voice calls.
  • DRPD (Distinctive Ring Pattern Detection) mode is used when a second telephone number is connected to the same telephone line; however, when the number is used it has a different type of ring pattern. (DRPD lines are set up by the telephone company and may incur an additional cost.)
  • TEL Priority mode is used when the telephone line is used for receiving voice and fax calls.

If the incorrect receive mode is displayed, perform the following steps:

  1. Press the middle FUNCTION button. (A telephone, two arrows chasing each other, and a sheet of paper will be displayed above the function button.)
  2. Use the UP or DOWN arrows to select the correct receive mode.
  3. Press OK to set the receive mode.
  4. NOTE: If DRPD is selected, the fax ring pattern can be selected by pushing the FUNCTION button under Advanced. Press OK for DRPD: FAX ring pattern and select the appropriate ring pattern.

Please refer to the appropriate receive mode set in the upper left corner of the screen to receive a fax:

  1. FAX Only – automatically receives and prints the fax.
  2. DRPD – automatically receives and prints the fax.
  3. TEL priority mode may require additional steps:
    1. TEL priority mode with answering machine (this does not include voice mail services through your provider) connected directly to the printer's EXT port –
      • Once the call goes to the answering machine, the answering machine will send the call back to the printer and automatically receive and print the fax.
    2. TEL priority mode without an answering machine connected directly to the printer's EXT port –
    3. Press and release the Black <START> button.
    4. Wait approximately 5 seconds.
    5. Press and release the Black <START> button.
    6. The printer will receive and print the fax.

After performing the above adjustments, please send a test fax to the following number: (855)392-2666. This is an automated fax line. Once the fax is received by provided fax number, a test fax will be sent back to you.
