Hi Oldmac75.
When replacing ink cartridges, the TR4520 needs to remain powered on. If the printer is unpowered when the inks are swapped, it will operate off of the "last known good level" rather than the new ink cartridge's level.
If using refilled or remanufactured ink cartridges, then the ink level on Canon cartridges is not designed to be reset.
