My MX870 won't print, because the large black ink cartridge is empty but the small black one is full

How can I get the printer to print using the black ink available in the smaller cartridge when the larger cartridge is empty?

Hi sbparks12,

Highlighting the text in your document and changing it all to another color other than black will utilize the smaller black ink tank and the other color ink tanks in the printer to print the text on the page.  In addition, if you are receiving low ink warnings on the printer, you can disable the ink level detection function on the printer so you can continue printing until you are able to replace the ink tank that is out of ink.  To do this, please press and hold down the STOP/RESET or RESUME/CANCEL button on the printer for at least 7 seconds, then release it.  Once the ink tank is replaced with a Canon genuine ink tank, the ink level detection function of the printer will be re-enabled.

Hope this helps!
