MG5751 grinding noise

HolmPC

I recently had a problem with an MG5751 where the paper would not feed through, and was damaged in a small area on the paper's leading edge. On inspection a ridged palstic piece was stuck out into the paper feed. I carefully eased this piece back and it clicked into place (on a spring, see attached pic).

Since doing this the printer is now feeding and printing fine again, but before every print it makes a loud grinding noise that lasts about a second.

Can anyone tell me firstly what the ridged plastic piece in the centre of the photo does, and secondly why I might now be hearing the grinding noise, and is it indicative of a bigger problem?
