why does it take longer for my A540 to process a photo than it did when it was new?

As you get older, it takes longer to process ANYTHING... I know from experience.
Just a thought - have you formatted your memory card recently? Either formatting the old card or buying a newer, faster one might help.

Yes and be sure to format the card in the camera not in another device.
Outside of that if you havent changed anyhting like the image size to super fine or using a diff memory card there is nothing else.
On an outside chance maybe a reset might help/

If that camera has a setting where it applies noise reduction make sure it's turned off & try that. Otherwise I'd suspect slow cards as the culprit.
