What I posted was a transcript, if you will, of what the customer service person I spoke to on the phone had me do. And since the only response from a Canon representative on the forum thread here has been "call us", I recommend the same thing if what worked for me didn't work for you or if you're using a different operating system, etc.

 

Call them and they will go through it with you step-by-step specifically based on your machine and your operating system and help you get it up and running.

 

I posted my phone support experience just in case my solution proved to be the solution for anybody else.
