PowerShot A630 Flash photos too dark in Auto/Portrait, too bright in Manual

Hi, I just got a used Powershot A630 as a gift and all my photos turn dark whenever I use flash on the auto and portrait setting but when I use the manual setting, the flash makes everything super bright. I’m wondering if there are other settings that can help fix this issue.
