No, depending on the settings, etc, it can be as much as 2505 pictures for an 8GB card

My camera says I have 2505 shots and if I take 300 pictures it says I have 2205 to go.  However when I either look at them on the camera or download them to my computer I only have the first 255 pictures!  Very strange.  Anyone have any ideas how to correct?

Yes that is odd.....What make and type of card are you using and did you format it in the camera first?

The card is an 8GB Centon SDHC.  I fomatted it in the camera.  I actually did it twice,  I just got the camera from my son-in-law and took about 400 pictures on vacation and only got 255.  After downloading the 255 pictures to my computer I then formatted the card again and took 300 random pictures to see if it happened again.  It did, only 255!  It's interesting to note that 255 = 2 raised to the 8th power minus1.

I'm planning to buy a different brand card to see if the same thing happens.

Is there a firmware update? Could be a camera bug.

I spoke to Canon and they said there are no updates.

An 8 GB memory card should give you enough storage space for roughly 1000 8MB files.

There's another test you can try while the card is in your computer. It should show up under My Computer or This Pc, the SD card. Right click on it, go to Properties then Tools. There you will see a Scan test to scan the card for errors...maybe that will turn up a clue as to what is going on.
