The PIXMA MX922 must have all of the inks installed and contain ink for the unit to able to print.
If you are experiencing a "Low Ink" warning, you will still be able to scan, but not print.
If you are getting a "Ink Out" error, you will not be able to use the unit until the ink is replaced.
These precautions are in place to prevent damage to the printer from occurring if printing with no ink is attempted. The printer uses the ink to cool the printhead during the printing process. If no ink is present, the printhead could be damaged.

This is a statement relative to how I feel about Canon printers and printers from any company that cares more about delivering less, and demanding more and more money for it. If this printer were hooked-up directly to my bank account, Canon's predictive modeling economics would have drained it by now, in anticipation of my 'needs.'
I joined this forum only to say this:
I purchased the MX922 about one year ago for around $200.
I am in the middle of a major project...and need to print black only. Black.
I DO NOT CARE IF CANON CANNOT FIGURE OUT HOW TO MAKE AN INK PRINTER PRINT BLACK WITHOUT MIXING EVERY COLOR OF THE RAINBOW...FOR its GRAYSCALE EFFECT.
I ALSO DO NOT CARE ABOUT THE MONEY I SPENT ON THIS 'METERED COLLECTION MACHINE' FROM CANON.
What I care about? Have a brand new, double-size black cartridge in it now, being out of one color, and having the printer FAIL TO PRINT.
SOLUTION: NO MORE CANON PRINTERS - NEARLY NEW OR NOT, THIS MONEY MAKING MACHINE FOR CANON IS GOING IN THE TRASH. NO HP (or any other brand, make or model) IF IT CANNOT PRINT WITHOUT COLOR. THANKFULLY WE DO HAVE A SECOND HP INK PRINTER ON HAND...AND YES, IT PRINTS WITH AN INK CARTRIDGE MISSING.
Thanks for the warning, Canon. Real slick. Of course, you would not warn customers IN BOLD that it will not print black if one color cartridge is empty...again, wait until the customer buys the printer, get'em hooked! Then the fact comes to light when the need is presented. Oh darn, Canon sells another overpriced color cartridge, while the customer only needs to print BLACK!!!
Totally unrelated, but in my irrational and punitive anger at Canon over this matter, I will be petty enough to say, I am glad I just spent a grand on an Olympus E-M10 Mark III, rather than the competing Canon camera. OK - you can delete my post now, as is your practice.

My previous printer had a black ink only selection my 922 does not. I can only conclude that Cannon did it to sell more cartridges. I'll start to buy generics till this printer caves then the next one I'll be sure and check for Black ink only.
