New Canon MF633Cdw printer fails to connect to software update server

The firmware update function fails to connect to remote server to check the version.

Is this something I have failed to set up on the printer (what?) or is it more likely to be a connectivity problem in my network?

How do I troubleshoot this?

Oops: Should be MF663Cdw. Fat fingers. How do I correct the heading/subject?

It seems that this is a problem from the initial device setup.

I set an administrator PIN, and after that, the printer willingly told me that it already has the newest firmware.

Unfortunately, I botched the process, so that I am now unable to access any administrator functions.

When I set up the administrator access, I was asked for

1) An administrator password. I chose a 4-letter word.

2) An administrator PIN. I chose a 4-digit number

3) An administrator name. It was pre-filled with the word "Administrator" and I left it alone.

Now, when I try to access any Administrator functions from the touch panel, I am asked to enter two items:

1) An administrator ID. It seems to want a 7 digit NUMBER, and I have only a numeric keypad for entering a value.

2) A PIN. I entered the above mentioned 4-digit number, I need to fill in the ID field as well, and of course it does not match.

I had hoped that I could reset it back to factory defaults, but apparently I need to contact "the dealer" for help. I doubt that BestBuy will be much help. Canon's 800 number rings and immediately hangs up. I suppose that is a time zone problem.

This is the worst install experience with tech gear that I have had in years!

In order to perform the firmware update, it appears that the remote access password has to be set?

The problems with getting locked out of administrator access have been resolved by a telephone call to the support desk at Canon. It turns out that you do NOT need to set an administrator ID in order to log in with the administrator privileges, unless you need to distinguish between an administrator and general users. So after clearing the botched administrator ID, I can get into remote configuration.

But I still cannot get the printer to show up in the iPhone's list of AirPrint printers.

Greetings,

Sorry you are having such a frustrating experience.  If you now have access to the remote UI, I would document the PIN you used to avoid confusion in the future.  You are correct about not needing a username to access the system manager function.  Just a PIN is needed.  In a personal environment, there is no reason not to log in as system manager since this allows configuration and access to all of the printer's features.

Firmware updates can be performed from the printers control panel.  It has to be connected to the internet via wireless or ethernet.  Swipe throught the list of icons on the LCD, you'll see it.

If the printer is failing to connect to the update servers, I usually suggest looking at your DNS settings.  What DNS servers is your connection using? Most ISP have their own, and some vary by customer location.

You can always specify your own too.  Google is 8.8.8.8, cloudflare is 1.1.1.1 for example.  Be sure to restart your router and the printer before trying to perform the update again.

"Printer does not show up in the iPhone's list of AirPrint printers".  Try using the Canon Print App.  It's a much better way to manage your device and print.

It seems absolutely to be a fact that on my MF663Cdw, the firmware update works only if the remote UI is enabled.

I had carefully documented both the PIN and the password, but somehow I had gotten an administrator ID set. I thought I had observed a default value of "Administrator" and left it at that, so I was shocked to see it wanting a numeric ID which I did not know because I had not set it. But with the help of the telephone helpdesk, I got it cleared out.

But I am having some problems with getting printing to work over WiFi now that I have had it to Wired and back.

Thank you for your always thoughtful responses here!!
