Selphy CP1200 will not pick up paper

It appears that the center arm below the paper cartridge is not raising the paper to allow the feed rollers to pick up the paper. I can wedge up the gate at the bottom of the paper cassette but I have to increase the height of the wedge as the number of papers remaining in the cassette decreases. Is there any way to determine why the arm is not raising and to fix it? I have not yet disassembled the printer but would be comfortable doing so if I knew what to look for.
