is there a method to retrieve the "external" serial number of a lens (Canon 24-70mm 1:2.8L) from a photo taken with this lens? I've tried the PhotoMe software, which only has the "internal" serial number.

I have never heard of an "internal" serial number? Maybe someone else can shed more light on the subject.
Are you referring to the date code and the lens serial number? Two numbers and they are not the same.
All Canon lenses do not have a date code. But I believe all "L" lenses do.

Hi mohavebrown!
Thanks for posting.
We are unaware of any software that will obtain a lens' serial number from an image taken while using that lens. The only serial number that is recorded with the image that we are aware of is the camera's serial number.
