Shadow on Canoscan Lide 300 Scans

I have a brand new a Canoscan LIDE 300 and on every scan half of the scan is perfect but the other half appears in shadow, and/ or  darker.   I've cleaned the cover and the platen, and fooled around with a couple of things but there's not much out there on this parrticular problem.  I'm thinking it could be defective but wanted to see if anyone else ran into this issue.
