What focal length do I use to get pictures in a performance?

This is a pretty difficult question to answer.  First off is it legal to take photos of the performance?  Location of the shooter?  Lighting? And on and on....  Provide some of these queries first.

The question is rhetorical. I was just posting a link to a good article that shows when you do have permission, what different focal lengths will look like at various points in the hall.
