Looked at Pond5 that was mentioned by a videographer. Don't so video but out of curiosity looked at Shutterstock. Does anyone here sell to them? Alternatives? Advice? I would be selling flowers, birds, wildlife, landscape. Thanks.

I have sold one through getty via 500px. The payout was so small, that my advice is not to bother. I have sold a few through fineartamerica.

And I put photos on my own web server:

I have also uploaded photos to Alamy, but have not had any sales there.
The photo of Lough Eske at Getty is being used in advertising by kayak for hotels.

I looked in to this once, but didn't bother.  Not for lack of skill in either photo capture or post-production, but two reasons.  Primarily, my lack of easy access to a high quantity of unique offerings.   And then the potentially very low payout vs the time taken.

Perhaps look into it if you live somewhere very unique (e.g. maybe there are landscapes, plants or animals that are exclusive to your location).

If you don't have something unique, look at various stock photo companies and try to understand what they are saturated with (you'd want to avoid such categories if possible).

One category I was interested in (effectively limitless content) is abstract images (e.g. images conveying an idea or simply an abstract image for the sake of abstractness).  But here's where the payout vs time for me wasn't worth it.

Thanks. I'll be at our local photography club and ask the question there. My idea came from a certain Nicole Glass who has sold video clips to Pond5. I don't do video. Ricky, North Georgia, East Tennessee and Western North Carolina are full of history, mountains, birds, wildlife, flowers, trees, etc. The Great Smoky Mountains NP is a unique ecosystem with some things occurring there and nowhere else.

"Advice? I would be selling flowers, birds, wildlife, landscape."

My advice is to forget it because you are going to be setting yourself up for disappointment. However, if you are diligent, dedicated, talented, and willing to put in the time and effort, you have a chance of making somewhere between zero and chump change. Given the subject matter you would be dealing in and its oversaturation -- flowers, birds, wildlife, landscape -- you will find a more appreciative and attentive audience here on this forum. Good luck.

Thanks. Seems selling photos is a sarurated market. My main idea is to build a stash of photos to accompany my magazine articles. Magazines buy photos for their archives to fill in where submissions don't have appropriate photos. Been there.
