Buying an RF 28-70mm IS STM: Used or new?

Cantrell

All,

I have a EOS R6M2 that I want to purchase the above lens to use with this camera. I have found a used RF 28-70mm IS STM lens at Adorama. It is rated Excellent Plus. Would you buy this lens with this rating from Adorama? Thanks in advance for any and all comments.

My Pleasure Reese.

Please stay away from places like Ebay and Facebook as you have no recourse if something goes wrong. MPB and KEH offer good warranties and honor them, I can say that because I have personal experience with both resellers. Have have also purchased several items that they say are excellent condition but when I received them were like new.

Whenever possible it's best to stay with Canon authorized retailers.

Here's a link to Authorized Dealers: USA Canon Authorized Dealers

Be aware the last time they updated their list was  6.14.24

I also attached a PDF below for quick reference.

Marc,

Thank you for your recommendation of MPB and KEH. I need to add them to my list of websites to check when I am looking for additional lenses or if I decide to add a camera. I appreciate all of your input.

Reese.  Hope your holiday went well with you and your family.  I think Canon lowered the price again just for you as it's back down to $1049 https://www.usa.canon.com/shop/p/rf28-70mm-f2-8-is-stm.    Please let us know what you get and how you enjoy it.

SignifDigits,

We had a good holiday season. Took pictures at our family and extended family get togethers. Used the R6M2 and the 24-240mm lens. Used the P mode and the M mode at these gatherings. I have been waiting for Canon to release some of the refurbished 28-70mm IS STM. The price on Black Friday was $770 and I ask to be notified, but nothing yet. I noticed that the refurbished has increased to $800.

Reese,

Glad to hear things went well.  I've purchased a few refurbished items and noticed that the prices can vary a bit.  I am not 100% sure you can count on the price that is there when you're added to the waiting list.  You certainly CAN count on the price when items are in stock, but I was pleasantly surprised on my RF 200-800 when I was notified it was available and the price was slightly under what had been listed when I signed up for the "notify me".  Of course, it could go the other way too, I suppose.  I buy used lenses as well as Cannon refurbished, and have been very happy with them.  What I have NOT done, and would be curious to hear from others, is had to ever USE the third-party warranty.  I have bought the extra warranty, but thankfully never had to use one yet.

Ebay and Facebook Marketplace can be good sources but you need to go in eyes wide open. Make sure you are allowed to try the lens on your camera before you lay your money down. Ebay does a very good job protecting buyers FB does not.

Almost all my gear over the years came from B&H, Adorama or my local camera shops. Unfortunately as of late there aren't any real local camera stores here. Sad.😔

SignifDigits,

The information regarding refurbished items was very helpful. Good to know about the fluctuation in posted refurbished prices.

briggs1,

I can sympathize with you about the lack of camera stores in your town. I live in a town in EasT Texas with a population of 105000 and no camera stores except Best Buy. When we moved here there were 4. I have to drive to Dallas if I want to touch or hold camera equipment before purchasing. I have noticed that there have been several camera stores close in the Dallas area over the years.

I have purchased equipment from Canon, B&H, Adorama, and bought one lens off of Facebook.

That's a big town for East Texas!  I grew up near Athens, and only about 10,000 folks, so it was either a trip to Tyler or Dallas.  Sounds like it's just Dallas now, sadly, and even those are getting fewer.  Best Buys are closing all over, so glad yours is still there.

SignifDigits,

We came to Tyler in 1985. Raised are two children here. They left Tyler after college and then they came back. Athens is about 35000. It was part of my territory and made frequent to that town.
