When photographing flying ducks, which is the best Auto point selection to use?

First, read up on sophisticated yet wonderful AF system of the 5D mkIII in your manual.  Read chapter 3 and become familiar with which AF group your lens will fall into.   Also go to Canon's Learning Center and watch the AF videos.

To get things rolling start with these settings:

- AI Servo mode

- AF Zone then try AF Expansion

- AF Case 1, then maybe try AF Case 2

- TV or M mode (may need some exposure comp with TV for birds in flight)

The 5D III's AF system can be highly configurable.  Be patient, keep things simple, practice and experiment.  When you are ready to experiment start here.

I must admit I've shot a fair amount  of action on my 7D but still experimenting with my 5D III.

Good luck, have fun, and share with us what you learn

What a wonderful link! Thank you again! It is a great help in interpreting these settings and gives me a starting point from which to experiment with my "bird" shoots.
