Have taken some pics and want to transfer to computer. When plugged in, macbook doesnt recognize the camera to import into pictures. Macbook version OSSierra 10.12.6. Latest driver from Canon I find is firmware version 2.0.3 but downloaded it and file won't open on macbook.

Greetings Michael,
No drivers are needed to connect your camera to a MAC or PC. Best to use the cable that came with the camera, IFC-400PCU or equivlent.
The FW (v2.0.3) you are referring to is for your camera (updates the version of software running on the camera). Its an image file you copy to your CF card. When you turn the camera on, it reads the file and prompts you to update the software. Once complete you remove te file from the card. More info found here
Upgrading the FW running on the camera is not mandatory, but wont hurt and you might as well do it considering the camera's age.
Getting a CF Card Reader as StanNH suggests will simplfy things
Also recommend you install DPP v4.7 for MAC, and the EOS Utility v2.11. Both found here

Get a CF card reader, plug it into a USB port, and import into Photos.
