Canon 70D Live View Mirror Sound

Aetherion

Hi,

Understand that when you press the Start/Stop button to switch to Live View mode from Viewfinder, it will produce a sound of the mirror flipping up.

But after that, during the live view mode, everytime I half-press the shutter button to focus, it keeps producing the same sound as the mirror flipping above, the LCD screen turns off for like half a second and on again with the subject in focus.

Is this normal or something is wrong with my camera?

Thanks.

Hi,

It sounds as if you are using the Live View "AF Quick" focus mode (page 243 in your manual) ... This drops the mirror temporarily, focuses using the array of sensors seen in the viewfinder (phase detection), then raises the mirror again. It is faster than the contrast detection method of Live View focusing used on most DSLRs.

However, 70D has the new "dual pixel" focus method available in Live View in other Live View focusing modes, which is pretty darned quick. So you shouldn't need "AF Quick" mode. See page 233 through 242 of your manual and choose one of the other Live View focus modes.

Hi amfoto1, you're right. That's what causing the annoying flipping sound. Thanks for the information.
