No pitchforks and torches but some more free advice, FW update is unlikely to, or can not, "fix" it. Your next step is to either heed this free advice or seek out Canon USA for a C&C as Stephen advised.

<chuckle!> And please do take Stephen's advice and send the camera in. We all benefit when Canon is profitable. You've already questioned, or even sneered at, the advice of several of this forum's most knowledgeable contributors, so it's unlikely that anything further we can say will be useful.

 

But one good thing should come of it: Canon's cleanings and inspections are very well done. Your camera will probably come back looking and functioning like new. But there's still at best a 50% chance that your micro-SD card will work reliably.
