I just bought a canon T5 and my sigma 28-200 lens does not communicate well at all with the camera. I used this lens with my Rebel X. Is this a common problem and is there a solushion or do I hafe to buy a new lens?

Most likely you will have to buy a new lens. Some/many older Sigma lenses designed for EOS film cameras are not compatible with newer EOS digital cameras. Sigma use to offer to rechip the lenses to add compatibly. There are also some tutorials about how to add a capacitor (or something) to some of those Sigma/Tamron/Tokina lenses to make them work.

If you do end up purchasing a new lens consider the EF-S 18-135 IS STM lens. It has about the same equivelent zoom range of your current camera/lens combination (29-216mm) and has very good image quality.
