I am unable to download photos from my rebel Sl1. How can I establish communication?

I have attempted to load the EOS software several times to my windows 7 machine and am unable to establish communication between my sl1 camera and my computer.  Is there a work around or do I have to buy a card reader or 3rd party software?

Well duh!  After struggling for three days, disabled the auto off function on the camera and BINGO!
