Using a standard testing protocol you can expect approximately 440 shutter snaps from a fully charged battery. Actual number will depend on temperature (cold lowers battery performance), how many times you blip shutter button for focus, how many times you view LCD, flash use and so on.

Long exposures (e.g. 30 second shots) will eat through the batteries faster.

Also, use of "live view" will eat through the batteries much faster.

If you expect to have long days of shooting, you can either carry spare batteries, or you can use the Canon BG-E14 battery grip which holds 2 batteries (instead of 1, although it will work with just a single charged battery and Canon's grips include a battery tray that you can load up with AA size batteries "just in case" you kill all your rechargeable batteries.)
