t5 camera with EF-S 18-55 IS and Canon EF-S 55-250mm F/4-5.6 IS STM Telephoto Zoom Lens

I have a Canon T5 Camera with EF-S 18-55 IS and Canon EF-S 55-250mm F/4-5.6 IS STM Telephoto Zoom Lens. I have the factory firmware which is Ver.  1.0.0

I only use this camera and lenses for every day picture taking. I am not a professional photographer. Do I need to upgrade the firmware to 1.0.1 as I see the uodated version is available on the Canon website. I am not very tech savvy so I I don;t need to do the upgrade I would prefer not to. Would the upgrade improve any picture/video quality?

Thanks for any assistance.

Yhanks ebiggs1. I think you are correct. My camera seems to work just fine with the factory version firmware and i am afraid the update might not take properly which would result in my camera being useless. I do not live close to a Canon repair shop so if its not broke don't fix it.

I would perform the update.  Firmware updates are usually released to correct something.  The web page where you can download the update should tell you what the purpose of the update is, and what's being corrected or added.

Sometimes updates add compatibility with new and future lenses and/or updated computer Operating Systems.  It is always good to have the latest update, because the associated software assumes as much.

I agree completely. Keeping the camera's firmware up to date is always A Good Thing.

You don't have to be tech savvy to do a firmware update, but you do have to be careful to follow the instructions exactly. Otherwise you can brick the camera. (Been there, done that; and I am tech savvy. Fortunately, Canon took pity on me and re-installed the firmware under warranty.) The instructions will probably offer you two options. Choose the option in which you use a card reader to place the update on a memory card and execute it from there. It's easy and straightforward. Downloading the update directly into the camera can be confusing and error-prone; that's how I got into trouble.

I'm not sure about this, but I think that if you send a camera to a Canon shop for cleaning and inspection, they will include any firmware updates at no extra charge if you ask them to. So if you were going to send it in anyway, you might want to look into that.

This update:

Firmware Version 1.0.1 incorporates the following fix:

1. Fixes a phenomenon in which the captured image may exhibit uneven exposure when the camera is used with a TS-E 17mm f/4L or TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II lens which is shifted or tilted during shooting.

So, if you are happy with the camera it is not necessary to update. I usually wait for the *second* update to come out since with only one, if something goes wrong and you want to revert you have to send it back to Canon to install 1.0.0.

This is the correct answer.  You will gain nothing if you don't have one of these two lenses.
