Hello,
I currently own a Canon D80 with the following lens:
I would like a 2nd body that is comparable to my D80, but an upgrade even slight would be preferable. I shoot primarily wildlife and I am going on an African safari in June, planning to take my 18-135 and my Sigma 200-600. Everything I have read suggested having two camera bodies and not trying to switch lens on a safari due to the dust. I would like to stay under $1,000 if possible. Definitely looking for something that would have better light gathering capability.
I believe my Sigma is full frame compatible along with my 70-300. Would you recommend a used full frame or one of the new more affordable mirrorless cameras, like the Canon RP. I might even step up to the R8, which I have found for just over $1,000.
Thanks, Jim

What are the FULL NAMES of the lenses you own. 3rd Party lenses may have compatability problems with newer cameras. Also NOT all Canon EF or EF-S lenses support all features on EOS R series cameras. This is also true with EOS DSLR cameras too.

When you say full names, not sure I can add much more when looking at the lens. The Sigma is the contempory version: 150-600mm 1:5-6.3 DG095. The Canon is the white lens: EF 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 L IS USM, Ultrasonic.
Would the R7 be any better or pose the same issues. I read the R7 battery is better, low light would not be as good, I guess I would have more reach with the crop sensor.
Thanks, Jim

Some of the Canon lenses you listed have multiple revisions to them. The EF-S 18-135mm F/3.5-5.6 lens has had 3 revisions of it. The Full name of Canon brand lenses is located on the outer ring. Or if you remove the lens cap on the outer edge.

Ok, that is what I added on the Sigma and Canon 70-300 (the picture you have is my lens). I did not add the EF-S name as it would not be compatible with a full frame, but is name is: EF-S 18-135mm 1:3.5-5.6 IS USM

The R7 is an APS-C camera. EF-S lenses can be adapted to Full Frame bodies the image sensor capacity is reduced by a factor of 2.56x. For instance the R5 is 45 megapixels in Full Frame mode but in APS-C its only 17.6 megapixels. That's why its not best to use APS-C lenses on a Full Frame EOS R series camera. Now Full Frame DSLRs are INCOMPATIBLE with EF-S lenses. They won't even mount to a Full Frame DSLR or EOS AF SLR.

"Now Full Frame DSLRs are INCOMPATIBLE with EF-S lenses. They won't even mount to a Full Frame DSLR ..."
As a practical rule, yes, but it can be done and has been by many people.

Yes I know EF-S lenses can be modified to mount on Full Frame cameras. But I would NOT recommend it. This is a mode of unsupported mode of operation.

As someone that has used the EF-S in a practical application on R bodies the results been quite pleasing. These images were shot on the R6 MK II with a EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM (Canon Adapter) in total darkness except for fill lighting. I have also used in on the R50 with the same results. AF works as well as the RF lenses.Even with the reduced MP you can obtain some incredible images.

“Yes I know EF-S lenses can be modified to mount on …”
Your use of bold and all caps indicates that it is impossible. If you make absolute statements make sure you are accurate which is how it come across.
