My 7d and EFS 17-55 lens is AF Microadjusted to +20 and still soft but when I press AF-ON it is

I have AF Microadjusted my 7D and EFS-17-55 f/2.8 out to +20 and it is still soft.  If I then press AF-ON on the top right of the camera it will refocus an be spot-on. Has anyone experienced this?

This sounds like operator error. IF it will focus accurately when you activate the AF system it's fine however it's been set (microadjusted). If it was soft after activating the AF then it hasn't been microadjusted accurately. You must de focus between each test shot when doing this. You might also want to try doing it this way
