Firmware Fix Request for Canon R6 – External Monitor & LCD Display

Dear Canon Team,

I have been a loyal Canon user for over 35 years, and I currently use the Canon R6. However, I am facing a frustrating issue that significantly impacts my workflow. When connecting an external recorder (Atomos Ninja V+), the camera’s rear LCD display and Viewfinder is completely disabled. This limitation makes it incredibly difficult to shoot effectively, especially when trying to capture and record stills while monitoring video externally. Now I am able to record the video externally on the device, however I am unable to use the camera to align or compose my shot.

What’s most concerning is that other major mirrorless brands—Sony, Nikon, and Fuji—do not have this issue. Their systems allow simultaneous use of both the external monitor and the built-in LCD, offering a much more seamless experience.

This has been a major disappointment, to the point that I am seriously considering switching to another brand that better supports modern hybrid workflows. I would like to know:

  1. Does Canon intend to address this issue with a firmware update for the R6?
  2. If not, is there any technical reason why this functionality is disabled?

I truly hope Canon listens to its long-time users and implements a fix to keep up with industry standards. I appreciate your time and look forward to your response.  When researching alternatives and solutions, all the videos on YouTube discusses working with the Canon R5, thinking that the interface and options in the menu are the same, which they are not.  I could really use a solution, I enjoy the Canon eco-systems, and would hate to switch out my entire business workflow just because of this single troubling issue.

Sincerely,

Jiro Preston

We are just users and cannot speak to Canon's plans

Usually, these kinds of issues are hardware related and cannot be fixed with a firmware update.
