EOS RP flash sync issues

Hi all,

I was recently contacted by an IG eos RP user regarding this issue and I tested it out today, and realized I too have this issue in my RP.  I was taking pictures with off camera and on-camera (external) flash, and any image above the 1/180 sync speed you can see the at the top of the image the black banding from the shutter.  I took it to 1/4000, and it was noticable in nearly all but one of my test shots.  I have two cheap speedlights, a Yongnuo YN568 EXII and a Neewer 985C, both have this issue, but it's far more noticable on the neewer.  The IG user who contacted me is using a Godox TT560.

Now, I know these are not canon speedlights...but I never had this issue in 650D/(T4i) while using the speedlights (both cameras max at 1/4000 shutter speed).

Could this be an issue of the t.1 power rating?  But if so, why at equal settings this is not visible in the 650D (T4i)?

Could the lack of mirror have the sync trhown off?  maybe faster now without the time of the mirror to flip?

Anyone else experiecning this?

lastly, I would not presume that the 1/80 sync speed in the camera would be affecting this correct?

Thanks in advance!

Nice. Thanks for the heads up.

Thanks for the heads up.  I can confirm that this has solved the issue.

I've tested from 1/160 all the way up to 1/4000 and no banding was found.

Thank you !

I experienced the same thing this weekend. I had a shoot in Atlantic City Borgata and when I was using Yongnuo 600ex rt II and I believe the max was 250 without banding. Sucks because I'm regretting it I didn't get Sony. I hope Canon starts listening to their customers and fix this firmware. The flash has no issue with 7dMK2.

I just tested the new firmware and upgraded from 1.1 to 1.2 and it works thank god and the focusing is much better 🙂 Happy again.

i updated to lastest firmware, but when using Godox XProC TTL triggers im having strange banding. Any ideas how to solve this or could this be camera defect?
this is pictures taken at speeds of 1/2000s

Same problem here.

Occurs with AD200, Ad200 Pro, XproC, X2TC.

With 430EXII and YN 685C everything is ok

Are you using the mechanical or electronic shutter?  Use the mechanical one with HSS.

you cant choose mechanical on EOS RP

You are correct!  False assumption on my part.  I cannot find a description of the shutter in the specifications. However, the EOS R has something called "Electronic Front Curtain Shutter", whatever that might mean.  The RP might be similar.  The point is, though, there is no mechanical shutter.
