Are you using One Shot Focus? Try using AI Servo, the one that doesn't beep. What happens?
We assume that you have sufficient light and distance from the subject to properly focus and take a picture.

Sorry for the late reply, I've been without out internet connection for a few days. I have tried to use the AI Servo setting and get the same result.
I have two different lenses and tried them both in the initial trouble shooting stage and in various scenarios, all with the same results.
I'm no professional but I believe there is some kind of short circuit between the trigger button and the main shooting mechanism. Because it seems strange that by clicking it to live view, I managed to get it going for a short while again.....
Any more ideas are greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Have you tried firing the shutter with a remote IR trigger? (I just looked at my wife's T2i, and it does appear to have an IR receiver.) If that works, it probably says that the shutter button is sticking or that something's broken in the mechanism. If I understand your description of the symptoms, the camera fires when you turn it on, whether you push the button or not. I guess that's at least consistent with a stuck button.

I haven't actually tried that, seems a good idea but where would I get a remote IR? It doesn't have a Wi-Fi connection so it would involve purchasing one wouldn't it, or finding a camera shop in South America that would let me try it first.
Yea it fires on start up, every time and sometimes when I switch the dial between modes, and then sometimes when you put it on to live mode.
IR triggers aren't very expensive, and it's useful to have one if you ever find yourself needing to take a selfie. Or if you're using a tripod and don't want to risk jarring the camera with your finger. B&H has a presence in Brasil, I believe; maybe you could order one from them.
Of course if a stuck or broken shutter button is the problem, you still have to worry about whether it's worth getting it fixed. But even if you don't, the IR trigger will probably work with your next camera.

Hello. I’m only replying to this thread after seven years. I’ve had a similar case with a 5D III two days ago and I have been searching the net for a solution. This is the first case that looks like mine. The camera also takes a shot when I turn it on. I can actually take a shot after having pressed a button like menu or playback, only the camera immediately takes a shot, no half press. The menu, playback and start/stop buttons don’t respond unless I half press the shutter. This is my weird case. Have you finally found a solution to yours?
