Perhaps a broken flex cable.

Yeah, I was thinking that too.. Bummer.
Interesting that it still communicates other relevant data to the camera though.

What if you unmount and mount the lens at different focal lengths?

Interesting idea.
I mounted the lens at 105mm with the barrel fully extended and took two photos at different focal lengths using remote shooting in DPP.
They both correctly identify the focal length - but the lens is still shown as "24-105mm"

Took the lens to the local camera shop today and tried a different copy of the same lens.
Other 24-105 lens works correctly.
Lens in question also shows the "24-105mm" lens info on a different camera.
At this point, I'm going to sell the thing & buy a different one.
I think that the possible ribbon/flex cable flakiness is the most plausible answer.
Thanks for the help!

This forum is confusing in the order of replies..
My copy of the lens showed "24-105mm" on a different camera today.
The other copy of the lens showed the correct "EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM" on my camera.
😕

You can change the order in the settings. I did for desktop use.
Glad you found out that the lens is the problem and not the camera.
