Canon m50- menu/images won't load up and the focus won't let reajust.

Hello, I had this camera for around five years and during a job it decides to not focus on the person infront but at a random spot. I tried turning it off and on to see if that would help but it changed to a different spot. No matter if I pressed down to focus on the person it wouldn't change then I tried using the menu to see if something I needed to change but it won't pop up when pressed on it. I thought it was the lense so I switched lense and it was till the same.

I think the OP's camera maybe dead. When the body starts to go the camera begins to lockup and the menu system becomes unavailable. This ended up happening to my friends mom's Rebel. She ended up getting pre-ordering the original 6D. She replaced that body back in August after the image sensor failed and went with the original R6. @BrianDavies do you own any EOS Bodies EOS 35mm Film Body, EOS Digital SLR/ EF or EF-S, EOS M/ EF-M Series, EOS R/ RF or a Power Shot camera.

Have you tried resetting the camera back to factory default. After that test the camera with the memory card removed and the lens removed. Make sure "release shutter without lens" is enabled before you try shooting without a lens.

Is there a physical reset on the m50? When I press the menu it won't take me to it.

No only in the menu.

Were you using lenses via a lens adapter? I had an M50 and the AF kept jumping to wherever it wanted to, on one occasion. The lens adapter was not quite securely attached (it was not rotated far enough to lock in place) and it caused the issue. I had the genuine Canon adapter. I have heard on several occasions that if you have a 3rd party adapter, even when properly fitted onto the lens mount, it has some play. Enough for the connection to be affected and the lens to stop focusing or causing erratic AF behaviour like you mentioned. One lady had a Viltrox adapter and 2 screws had fallen out of it, causing a wobbly connection between lens and lens adapter.

Usually the lens won't function if its not mounted correctly. The camera would also throw an error code too when this happens.

That particular day, that is exactly what happened. The AF kept jumping all over the place. The camera functioned fine, but the AF was erratic. I rotated the lens a little and the adapter turned with it (because the lens was correctly on the adapter) and then it clicked into place with an audible click. After that, the AF was good again. I realise though that you did say "usually" the lens won't function. It may have been alternating between making a connection and not making a connection (just not quite turned enough to make a sold connection).

EF lenses flat out won't work at all if its not mounted correctly. EF-M may be a completely different story. They won't show an F/# at all it will show F/-- if the camera can't communicate with the lens. Also NO AF, Aperture control, or use of the Electronic Focus Ring (STM lenses, Select USM lenses) at all either.

Say what you like, I had the experience you didn't. What I said happened is precisely what happened... not sure why you keep trying to prove a point.

I've heard of strange things happening with lenses that you described. They ended up having a failed ribbon cable. Which is a costly repair which turns into lens replacement. But what the OP says that they can't access the menu system system sounds like more problems are going on. They also said they switched out lenses too. But the problem persist. The menu should always be available.
