Advice on upgrading a Canon camera from EOS Rebel T5

Hello everyone!

I am in the market for upgrading my Canon camera. I currently have the Canon Eos Rebel T5, which has served me well as a previous beginner photographer (I bought it in 2015!). Now that I am significantly more experienced in photography, I would like to upgrade.

I do a lot of portrait and event photography, so I need something good in various lighting situations (from outdoor, to lowlight concert photography), as well as an overall sharper image quality.

I had my eyes on the Canon 6D mark ii and the Canon 90D, but I am also fully open to other cameras and potentially a mirrorless option. I want something that will last me a long time and really be worth my money.

I have saved up enough for a budget of $2,500-$3,000 USD and hopefully also get a lens that would work within that budget too.

Also, would the lenses I have for my T5 still work if I upgraded any of the models listed above?

Please help a friend out, any feedback is helpful! Thank you!

What lenses do you already own? If they are EF-S mount lenses, they would only work on a crop sensor (APS-C) DSLR such as the 90D. Or should work on any mirrorless camera. If on a full frame mirrorless camera, it may put the camera in crop mode.

The 90D would be most similar to what you have. Full frame cameras can ultimately lead towards better low light handling, though you’d typically first want to explore lenses with faster apertures (at least f/2.8 or wider).

For mirrorless options, do check out the R7 or R10. Or the R8 if wanting to go full frame. If going with an R-series camera, you’d need to pick up an EF to RF adapter (stick with the Canon brand; starts around $100)

Would you like to stick with a DSLR or move to mirrorless. What lenses do you have EF or EF-S. Would you like to stay with APS-C or move to Full Frame. For cameras I would recommend the R7 for APS-C. For Full Frame look into the R8 or R6 Mark II.
