Doesn't really matter but red paint will put it back.

Also he might try red pin stripping tape.  Actually it works on any lens.  It will even turn your "kit" lens into a Canon "L" lens.

Is the lens a Cannon?  If it can slip back on in place I'm sure a dab or two of superglue would suffice.

Thank for the response , it is a canon 24-105 4.0 L lens. I have to track down some super glue and try it.

Almost 10 years to the day! The red ring just came off of my 24-105 f4. Do you remember what you ended up doing?
