lense to take family pictures

I want to take a good family picture.  I have an EOS T7.  What kind of lense should I get.  I'm a beginner and I don't have budget for something high dollar.  Can you please suggest a lense

Sorry, I wasn't suggesting either of those lenses for the purposes of this thread, just responding to your gear list!

I think the OP has a great set of options from the ones we have specifically suggested, and I suspect much will boil down to availability and economics - neither of which we can really predict.

The EF 28-135mm has served me well for years a long lense. Before I upgraded to FF or had any other FF or L lenses. With a FOV of 45-216mm on an APS-C.

All the bloviating above aside, all you need is the kit lens that came with your camera. I don't think the T7 is available as a camera only. So, you don't need any additional lenses. If you bought the two lens kit, the smaller lens is the one to use for family photos. Don't be fooled or let people talk you into stuff you don't need. Spend that money and/or time learning how to use your T7.

Rebel series cameras are sold as either 1 or 2 lens kits only no body only option. OP's Rebel should've came with the EF-S 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6 IS II (non STM) lens. If a 2 kit option the 2nd lens should be EF 75-300mm F/4-5.6 III (non USM) lens. Unless OP bought the camera used with different lens(es) that I mentioned above. Or if OP wants to upgrade their current lens.

The 18-55mm and 75-300mm kit lenses are not Canon’s best efforts.  A good inexpensive lens for indoor photography is the EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM lens. It’s fast, wide, and pretty sharp.

No version of 75-300mm was a good lens and all suffered big time. I believe there only used as kit options now. The 18-55mm STM variant seems to better than the older DC AF motor versions. There aren't many options when it comes to EF-S lenses. But the EF-S 24mm F/2.8 STM is a good prime lens.
