Is it the 10-digit number etched into the black plastic near the SA lock switch?

Yes. Between the Lock and IS on/off switch. It should also be on the box and the warranty card. I always double check body against box and card.

That number is on the box as part of a much longer number ... misplaced my warranty card ...

Yup, they throw in some extra codes, but the s/n buried in there (uninterrupted) will match the lens. It's just a good check to make sure someone didn't swap box/lens. That's why I like the reg card, it's exactly as it appears on the lens 🙂
I've had this lens for a while now and really love it. I also had the EF version for my DSLR's. Just amazing lenses.

I had the old EF 100mm - great lens but no IS ... I get shakier as the years pass!

I know that all too well, and since I shoot a lot of macro hand held, I had to get the EF version with IS.
