RF24-104 f/4 L IS USM MF guide markers appear instead of AF points, lens freezes

I've recently experienced issues with my RF24-105 f/4 L when the manual focus guide markers will randomly appear instead of the autofocus points.  Camera is an EOS R and set to One Shot.  The lens also appears to freeze at times.  When this happens, the green autofocus points appear without the shutter button not back button focus depressed.  The green autofocus points stay illuminated regardless of where I'm aiming the camera.  Turning the camera off and restarting clears the issue.

The RF 24-105 is my primary lens and on the camera nearly all the time.  Haven't experienced a similar issue when using the RF100-400 lens.

Thanks in advance for any help or recommendations!

John

If the issue occurs with the RF 24-105mm F4L IS USM and not with the RF 100-400mm then it points to this being an issue related to the lens rather than the camera. It would appear that the camera is losing contact with the lens at some points and this results in the manual focus points appearing and possibly you also see the aperture value display change to F00.

I would check you have the latest firmware in the camera and lenses.

  • EOS R - version 1.8.0
  • RF 24-150mm F4L IS USM - version 2.0.6
  • RF 100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM - no update is yet available

The firmware for both the body and lens is the most current version.  Additionally, I gently cleaned the contacts on the lens and body when I first experienced this issue.  It appeared to help for a short period, however the issue returned.

Thank you,

John

If you have some way to try the lens on another camera that would be the obvious test to try next. Though ultimately you will probably need to send the lens in for service.

Two points John.........

First it's not a good idea to do a FW update or replace FW when a camera is malfunctioning. Second cleaning the lens and/or the camera contacts rarely to never helps and if done incorrectly can damage them. The fact it seemed to help is meaningless as it didn't as you now know. Correlation/causation at its finest.

This may well be a lens issue but first reset the camera, complete reset, to default setting and try it again. If that doesn't clear it up call Canon 1 (800) 652-2666

Thanks.  I’ll give a complete reset a try
