Is this as sharp as I should expect from EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L is USM on Canon R50?

I managed to get my hands on this lens (original EF 100-400 with the push-pull) for free and have paired it with my R50 with a Canon adapter. I was having trouble with autofocus so these were taken with manual focus, but I think I just need to dial in my autofocus settings. I've seen some people complain about softness with this lens so I'm wondering if these photos are more or less as sharp as I can expect. If not, I'd appreciate any tips on what I can be doing better!

If these are manual focus then you have done a good job. Animal subject with eye detection may help you to use the AF, but I'd recommend doing that with 1-pt AF or a small square flexible zone AF to limit where the camera looks initially for the subject.

I agree with Brian. BTW, love the chipmunk photo. Look like he was posing for you.

I had that lens and for sure it is not a real sharp lens even as zooms go. I have no idea how well it will be able to make use of the AF on a R50 perhaps not at all. I ended up selling mine to buy the ef 400mm f5.6L prime which is very sharp. Matter of fact, I have two of them and both are wonderful way, way better than the 100-400mm push-pull zoom. Big tele zooms like the 100-400mm tend to be used at the long end far more than at their short end so a 400mm prime is not a big limitation. But for free how can you complain? It's a decent lens but not a great lens.
